How do I know if my garage door opener is chain or belt driven?

Both types of garage door openers are similar in the way they work. Here are a couple of factors that differentiate them:

• Operating Principle. The chain drive opener uses a threaded steel rod. It moves the trolley along the track, causing the door to move. The belt drive opener works similarly; only it uses a wide rubber belt to move the trolley.
• Strength. The chain drive is much stronger than the belt drive and can sustain a more significant load. Therefore, it is more commonly used for heavier garage doors.
• Noise. The chain and the steel rod make a lot of noise when moving. A belt-driven opener is quieter.
